Club racing on black felt
I was able to run at TQRC on new black felt carpet over the weekend, and I learned some interesting stuff:
Green rears still work well, this isn't shocking but still useful. Greens had been of little use to me on the old TQ rug because they wouldn't last the race distance, but they worked well over the weekend.
Ulti X compound tires can still work, but you need to cut them down pretty small and glue the fronts.
I tried running magentas front/rear and they weren't bad, but they were old dry tires and had distinctly less grip than my newer tires. They had good balance, just not fast. I think they would have been better if they were fresh.
Tire sauce was much less important than I thought it would be, a quick sauce or long it didn't make much difference in car performance. Tire size and compound was the major driver of car balance.
The black carpet made my car much more rear grip biased, and this was typical across all racers.
Most racers also had an interesting handling imbalance in that many racers said that their car seemed to "die" mid corner, losing all corner speed and then pushing badly through mid corner. I failed to completely remedy this last weekend, but I suspect that a softer front spring would have done better than my CRC 0.50mm.
Cars were being driven with much more throttle to compensate for this lack of corner efficiency, and battery capacity used went through the roof. For some of us playing around with modified cars, 8 minutes could use 6000+ milliamp hours.
Aluminum chassis are good things. Switching from my carbon car to my aluminum chassis car made it much easier to drive.
There was quite a bit more but you can only learn so much over one weekend.
