You should go to the front spool from the 4x that has steel outdrives and doesn't get harmed when the blade fails (the spool and diff are the same size and fit both cars). The biggest cause of lots of blade failures is damage to the Alu outdrives. On the 4x I get a whole race meeting without having to change blades and that's in modified.
I just recently converted my 3.0 and 4.0 over the the "new" spool from the 4x with the hardened out drives. The beat up pins on the drive shaft also seem to be an issue with causing premature failure on the plastic blades as well.
Blades are cheap, but when you have to start replacing spools and possibly drive shafts, it get expensive just to avoid a pretty simple issue.
The issue with the blades is really only with the spool, as I switched my mod car over to a diff with 2 million oil in the front to lessen the drive train shock. Once I did that I didn't even have to replace the blades at all for the mod car.
