I would start with electric 4wd Short course. There will almost always be a class at indoor and outdoor races. These vehicles have large bumpers all around the car that help with crashes.
Traxxas vehicles seem to be a good starting point for anyone getting into the hobby, but if you are looking for a more competitive brand, Tekno, Losi, Kyosho are examples of other manufacturers that make a vehicle more tailored to racing.
But maintenance and preparation is key with any vehicle. It doesn't matter what car you buy if it isn't maintained and prepared for race/practice days. You'll end up wrenching on it most the day instead of having fun.
