Another good option - the ECX AMP MT. There is even a "Build to Drive" kit version with a clear body. Kit comes with all the same electronics as the RTR, so it is still kind of ready to go. $129, assembled or kit. Brushed power is great for a small kid. My 6 and 7 year olds do great with brushed RC's up to about 15-20 mph. Above that, they have issues...

BTW, My oldest son started in RC on a brushless ECX Torment (SCT). All the ECX 2wd's are 90% the same. My son's Torment to a beating, and had very few issues.
