Read the prior posts on this page on gear stripping. Shimming is just adding or removing spacers between the outdrive bearings and diff to adjust the mesh between the ring and bevel gears. proper mesh is important to minimize gear breakage. There's a new light weight center shaft that's supposed to help too.
