What is the general consensus about when to replace belts...when they just completely fail and fall off the car?

Thanks in advance!
With missing teeth I would definitely replace them. Running on asphalt is much harder on belts than indoors on carpet. I replace them when they show excessive wear, or before a big race.

Once damaged, torn tooth or crack in the belt - best to replace otherwise you may end up replacing pulleys/diff cases too!
The white belts last longer for the majority of people per Hagberg and Wahl, as well as in my past experience.
