To expand on what Luke just corrected himself on, my understanding is this:
Stock mode = If you think of it as a ramp, stock mode is aggressive in it's step's which gives you that "punchy" feel.
Mod mode= is a much smoother ramp, allowing you to have that "mellow" feel.
The above is directed more to 2S touring car as a rule of thumb, but one should totally exp with both settings while keeping everything else the same. Even in touring mod, some guys are running the speedo in stock mode.
In 1S ( 12th scale ) Most guys are running the stock mode for both spec classes and mod classes to make up for the mellow 1S voltage.
