Last I saw, 25 entries for 1/12 spec tire 17.5. That was the weakest turnout I have read about for 1/12th scale this last year.
You are absolutely right, turnout was down at MHIC in 17.5.
What I can say about that is there were a lot of people who were very skeptical about the spec tires going into that race, and of course that contributed to the low turnout. I myself was skeptical of them as well. We had ran the spec tires at our local track and they were BADDDDDDD (with lots of D's).
That being said, at MHIC on the black carpet with a subfloor they were GREATTTTTT. From early on it was clear that the spec tires worked almost the same as anything else we brought to run in 13.5. At no point did I feel like I was lacking grip or lacking steering. In fact I think they would have worked just fine in 13.5 as well (I ran pinks all around in 13.5).
Overall, I really think people are just going to have to try it for themselves. Hopefully after they do more people will open up to the idea of a 17.5 spec tire on the new black carpet. There are lots of opinions out there, myself included, that were dispelled at MHIC.
