Is the idea to reduce friction by reducing contact between the gears? I'm curious now. By reducing the gear width by half, you'd have half the surface touching, but double the pressure. Hmmmm.....
I was not wow-ing at the amount of labor, I was wow'ed too by how much the person took off! That just appears quite unnecessary to take that much off.
