Anything can be (or made) competitive, the problem with the H8.5 was weight, everything was over sized. It was the most advanced design in it's day, remains actual.
About the shocks I disagree a little, the shocks are the same in every way except in shaft volume to shock body volume and now you can run way more than two holes in the pistons but people still haven't nailed a good setup
well some cars have a very good shock setup out of the box but people ruin it asap...
