Thanks for the tips on tweak and balance. Finally got the car running in a straight line! 12th scale definitely has its own unique set of setup issues to be aware of. turns out the side links were binding, the front axles were slightly different heights and the side springs not adjusted properly. In addition the 12g motor wires probably too thick and also contacting the body. End result was an undrivable car. After resolving these issues the car is now awesome. The corner speed 12th scale is capable of is going to take some getting used to though...
