The startup algorithms for sensorless motors are goofy, at best. I've written software to do it--probably 30 years ago!-- so I have sympathy for those engineers that attempt it.
My SkyRC Toro 1S ESC works in both modes, but I can tell when the sensor cable detach itself after a crash, starting up gets coggy, and it loses all its smoothness out of slow corners...
