The short end is the normal right handed (clock wise) side.

it is threaded, but i've tried various ball cup ends and none of them catch. however, those same ball cup ends catch on the other tie rod ends. For sure there's a defect someway, somehow on this one particular rod end. I've put together over 40 kits new. So i'm no rookie at this (just clarifying).
