Definitely go with aluminum for racing. And I agree with Avkink007 on the Xenon pinions. Not only have they been the longest lasting pinion I have used, they are also among the lightest. I run exclusively on outdoor asphalt, never had a problem. Spur gears tend to come down more to what fits your car the best, but I also really like Xenon spurs when they fit, or Panaracer spurs when they don't. The Panaracer pinions are a bit heavy for my liking though. Haven't tried the Arrowmax, so not sure on those.
