They are definitely not needed. I would recommend the new shock shafts with the v2 pistons though (v2 pistons use a screw to attach the piston rather than eclips). The pistons are only available in the machined delrin and these will decrease friction within the shock. The Kashima bodies just take it that little bit further. Make sure to use the x-rings when building the shocks too.
