I've found that wing joining tape from the hobby shop works a lot better for repairs than drywall tape. Drywall tape isn't really structural. Its just to hold the mud, or Goop/ShooGoo in our case.
With this tape, you put a real thin coat on with your finger, then cut the tape to length and press it tight. Then coat the whole thing with a thicker coat of Goop/ShooGoo. Makes the repair really strong.
Its called "Wing Joining Tape" and it comes from Great Planes or Carl Goldberg. Most shops carry it. 1", 2", 3" widths x 5'-0" long. Plenty for lots of bodies for about $4.00.
