You can test the ESC on the bench with out the capacitor bank connected. If the ESC works through the rpm range and brake range then it may have survived the reverse polarity.

The Capacitor bank PCB also has a diode on it that may have been damaged.

Do not rev the car to high free wheeling if you have a motor of high rpm (mod motors)
