I haven't seen a way to enclose the spur gear to keep pebbles out so if you race on a gravely track the best thing you can do is check the spur after every run and kick the pebbles out with a pick or whatever you have. Also a steel pinion... not that it will help the spur but it will last longer than aluminum at an outdoor track.
