There's no reason you can't run a one-way with rubber tires. I wouldn't use HPI X-pattern tires, though. Try Pit-Shimizu or TakeOff 24's or 27's. If you install the one-way, you'll need to back your brake off quite a bit and remember that you lose steering when you let off the throttle. It works a lot differently than diffs and will take you some time to get used to it.
