The Tamiya shells are definitely a bit pricey, but they are just so incredibly detailed. They include proper light buckets and the sticker sheets they come with are insane. By far the most true to scale looking shells.
I tend to lean towards limiting GT to actual GT race cars, like Scotty's IIC body list, but maybe a bit larger list. Too bad there aren't more of those shells available, for a reasonable price.
check out teambluegroove on ebay. they're making a LOT of older bodies - including some of the older HPI ones. no decals or masks, but they look good and kinda makes me wonder if they bought some of HPI's old molds
