Oops, forgot that. Correct don't want 2 power sources fighting each other, not good, one will lose. Normal drill to to pull and insulate the red wire coming from the ESC (or use a short servo extension, mod it to keep the ESC lead unmolested). Yes to receiver battery in BATT slot (although it probably will work in any slot).

Course you can just leave the ESC disconnected, start with just seeing if you can get the servo going.
