I have to be honest, I don't think they understand the gearing/tires. Not to speak ill of some of the drivers, but they aren't use to these types of setups yet. It will probably settle down back to 14-16t as things go forward for a good chunk of the average tracks. The massive size of these tires and power they put down, 18t is pushing 50-55mph in many situations and just nearly impossible to handle. Truggies have major torque on the low end geared properly for ~40ish mph max and I think some are thinking that means they're undergeared and trying to adjust accordingly to 16-18t+.

Understanding the size of the tires and the role it plays is paramount. It's a learning curve that will be overcome as people realize truggy != buggy.
