have'nt tried to connect mine yet , but will post findings when I do,
also remember reading somewhere that the order of connection(as above) is important

I tried exactly this method.

When the esc is connected to a pc through the card, the card displays "connected to pc". The fan turns slowly.

Opened the software.

Connected the battery and the led turns on and is red. The fan speed picks up. The esc beeps the number of cells.

Push the power button and it does nothing.

Click the "read esc" button on the software and it acts as if it's going to open and then closes completely.

Also, if you push and hold the power button, the esc shuts off and the software tries to open and then completely closes.

Something is wrong with the software.
