I personally think 4 gear mm is noticeably more difficult to drive than 3 gear rear or mid motor due to the added gyro effect from the motor rotating the same direction as the wheels. However due to the improved weight balance of mm I believe it to have more total potential in the right hands which means a good driver could be faster. This is probably what he is referring to.
