It really doesn't matter what the timing or gearing is, being reasonable. If the motors going to develop a short it will do it at any setting.
I've seen
BRAND NEW Revtechs and Kill Shots go "poof" after 3 laps. It only took me 5 laps to kill my last Revtech. All of the "extreme" examples of failure were installed properly, timed properly, and geared appropriately for the layout. Gearing and timing aren't to blame in these cases - these are failures caused by manufacturing-related defects.
