I did the same, tube on the bottom of diff lowered into the diff fluid bottle and used a brake vacuum pump for bleeding brakes that I never use to create the suction. Harbor freight has one for $26. that has a gauge too, not that its needed, but the pump works well. At first I put a compression spring inside a syringe I had that pushed the plunger up to keep suction going. Unfortunately the syringe I had was too small, but I then remembered I had the brake vacuum pump. Worked nicely.
