Using a flash for indoor r/c racing is fine, as long as you do not shoot towards the driver's stand. shoot away from it.

for indoors, the flash and these settings will yield good results:

1/125 shutter
f/8 aperture
ISO 400 (anything higher may produce noisy photos)

and you may need to "pan" a little with the cars..
