Yes...cheap for each part... But if bought in a full kit that is where the real savings are. I once did some calculations on a car build like the one you are talking about... If I bought everything cheap and individually, I still would end up spending nearly double on putting it together from scratch.
So no... If you want a kit, buy a kit. If you want a bunch of parts, buy a bunch of parts.
