It is sheared off at the case and has been like this for 3 months problem free

The difference is percentages. The Airtronics radios have a MUCH greater range than Spektrum radios. Your Airtronics has a range of 1500'+/- where as my Spektrum has a range of 500'+/-. When you rip off your antena & cut your range by 90% you still have a range of 150' (more than enough for most tracks), but mine will have a range of 50'. Not much good for anything.
