What he means by "car would help" is that some cars have a different internal gear ratio (IGR). For example, the TC3 had a 2.5:1 IGR and the TC5 has a 2.0:1 IGR. If you put the same pinion/spur in those two cars, you would have one car going 20% slower than the other.
