agree with everything that will said. i actually first started rc and racing with a mod short course. it was way too fast for my skill level at that time. i was crashing, as i didn't have the throttle and brake control needed to handle a mod motor. i then put a stock motor in and began running more cleaner laps and not crashing. subsequently, i ran faster laps than i did with a mod motor at that time. basically, stock will help you to run clean, consistent laps without crashing, as the speed/throttle is more controllable. when you're able to run consistent laps in stock, then try out some mod motor. the speed and power is awesome.
in addition, as will stated, there's always guys running stock short course.
bottom line though, run what's fun for you. both mod and stock classes are a ton of fun. hope this helps
