Putty is essential, a dedicated balancer really helps. A free and quick alternative is to remove the cvd or dog bone leaving just the stub axle in the knuckle so it spins freely. Then position the vehicle so the tire is straight and level. You now have a makeshift balancer.

Putty is really needed to keep the added weight from moving. If the weight moves you're not accomplishing anything. You can add more weight than just the putty, I had to add some bb's to some really out of whack Big Joes. Sometimes you will need to add weight in more than one place and thats ok as long as youre not adding weight 180 degrees from where you already added it. If you're ever unsure just remove the putty and start over.
