Oddly, this was a discussion a few of us (from different teams!) were having in the bar on Saturday night. We concluded that the reason so many cars seem to do well and be popular in the US is because of the popularity of the 17.5 class and small, high-traction tracks. The combination of low speed and high grip can make many cars feel "dialled".
It's not until you put some power into the car (ie modified motors) and run on a larger, non-high bite tarmac circuit that you properly test the car and find out the weaknesses.
