Different batteries have different tolerances for high charge rates. 1C is generally very conservative. I have batteries from Gens Ace, Value Hobby, and SMC, and all of them can be charged at 3 or 5C.

I routinely charge 6500 4S packs at 16-18A; the batteries don't even get warm.
