This is still a visual system but it makes it a lot easier to get a good idea of toe. A friend of mine came up with this idea. It works quite well. Cut two pieces of 1/8" (ID) brass tubing about 4" long (100mm). Remove the front wheels, slide the tubing over the stub axles. The length of the tubing gives a good visual idea of toe in/out.
