That type of breakage is usually the result of the steering knuckle being jammed into the droop posts. I've seen that type of break when someone smacks into the wall really hard, fast and often.
I'm not the best driver out there and haven't broken either the lower or upper arms although I've bent the uppers a few times.
Also the result of someone having their steering travel too high. Turn it down on your radio to the point it just isn't touching the post.
