13g wire is fine

You will want a fan on your ESC. And you will want more drivetrain spares on hand (belts, pullies, driveshaft couplings, etc)
On carpet yes, I see more stock class drivers running an LTC and for mod we run a Speed6 the majority of time, the only person that I know that runs a LTC in mod on carpet 99.99% of the time is Josh, I think Paul has ran an LTC on carpet his last couple of races. On asphalt LTC for both stock and mod.
