Interesting as I seem to recall that it was suggested to just add weight to the stock chassis, possibly a similar amount as what the Exotek chassis does versus buying the actual chassis.
Hence, the benefit of using heavier springs with your logic would be seen stock chassis as well.
As for whether there is a benefit or not, try it and see. Craig's explanation is probably the best on the "why". As for where to use it, I used the higher rates in both extreme low traction conditions as well as highest grip carpet. It works.
