My old TC3 that I just revamped for legal VTA specs was originally in 2wd form and had a RWD 240x body on it. Handled pretty decent with just RWD too, had some tendencies to want to drift exiting the corners which is even more realistic. I wouldn't say converting all current platforms to run 2wd is the best way to go though.
