TMACK, I am sure if you spoke to anybody there they would be very willing to give advice and its FREE
As for car, there are many brands, Tamiya, Xray, Associated and others that all can provide a great platform to race.
Pending on what class you plan on entering, will all need to be considered prior to purchasing a car and equipment.
There are Touring cars (TC), Mini, F1, with TC cars have different classes within, 21.5 (slowest), stock then mod (fastest).
So pending on what class you wish to enter, this is when talking to the regulars will help on what chassis, electrics, radio gear etc would suit your preferred class.
Then the option of new or second hand. Many of regulars will always have second hand equipment that would always suit someone starting in the hobby along with club sponsors that can provide new equipment if that is your preference.
Work out what class you want to start with, talk with the regulars, work out what $$$$ you want to spend then look at new or second hand
Then go racing
