From what I observed the 4 o-rings on the shock shafts keeps the universals from hitting the diff-out drives on full compression. (when you happen to land on one wheel and compress fully) This is something that Associated told owners to do to keep the diffs from leaking.
There was an explanation a few pages back. The driveshafts should not hit the outdrives even without the bump-stops (full travel). The o-rings were added because the car handled better in most conditions.
