I usually do a rebuild when it starts to feel notchy, not as smooth as when I rebuild new. usually flip the both sets of rings if haven't been done already, new balls all around or at least the bigger diff balls if I am running the smaller ceramic ones.
I'd never get to run my car if I rebuilt the diff every time it felt notchy. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but no matter what I do my diff is only smooth after a complete rebuild, I can never seem to get all the grit out of it.
