don't assume that one setting will work for every track and every kind of layout.
you're best going with the spur gear that will give you the biggest range of gear combos - so while 96t might work, you might not be able to get a huge range of gearing...so you might have to consider going to smaller then 96t
honestly, a lot of times its trial and error - even after asking in a fourm..

From what can you tell that you are running a good gear ratio on track?
A frined of mine told me to watch for motor temp.
