you're best going with the spur gear that will give you the biggest range of gear combos - so while 96t might work, you might not be able to get a huge range of gearing...so you might have to consider going to smaller then 96t

honestly, a lot of times its trial and error - even after asking in a fourm..

check out here - http://www.gearchart.com/ - to build your own chart...try a couple of different pinions in the charts to see which gives you the biggest range...
