The ONLY thing I can think of is that Viper has a temp cut off setting that you can use that monitors the temp of the motor internally, rather than externally. If you use anything other than Viper motors, you could see a variance in the temp reading. And that's not even a definite. Most of us don't use that cutoff anyway. We just use the temp cut off for the ESC itself.
Ok I clarified with Viper directly. The issue is only with Speed Passion ESC and Viper motors. Below was their response.
"The only compatibility issue we have heard was Viper VST motor will not work properly with Speed Passion's new Reventon ESC. Speed Passion suggests customers to cut one of the sensor pin to bypass the temperature signal. You should be able to find that news in Speed Passion's web site.
