I would say instead of cutting back on the EPA just manage the the pull on the throttle, smooth and easy and not always looking to get it wide open. This will do nothing to help with traction as a brushless motor is instant torque from the low RPM all the way up unlike a nitro or gas motor that has to build torque up in the RPM range.
Limiting the power can help keep some strain off the battery if you are using a lot of motor if you manage in terms of punch control or current limiter. But that is not the same as the EPA or limiting throttle in terms of top end speed at all. It will help out a lot if you are having traction issues though.
What ESC are you using? Different ones will have different terminology for the same feature (ie punch control / current limiter).
