That sounds very reasonable. Based on the picture below, the HPI '78 Firebird body comes with a spare nose piece in the bag, but the body itself looks like it comes with the nose already attached (unlike Protoform's J71 body where you have to attach the nose).
If there was a replacement nose piece to make it into a '72 Firebird, then you could just cut off the '78 nose and put on the '72 nose.
