Correct, cutting the Leading Edge would in theory reduce timing.....cutting the trailing edge would in theory increase timing......I rarely do either, as you typically lose some where else in the motor and a motor that commutates bad....

You can cut or drill out serrated brushes....I just don't do it very often.
