Plastic isn't gonna be solid until it gets to about half inch. Be careful on what type of plastic because they aren't all fuel proof. Lexan is, but I don't think you can get really thick lexan.

Carbon fiber that big is solid at about 6mm, that is pricey though.

Best bet might be 1/4" tempered glass, but that is fragile. Just be careful with it and sand/bevel the edges.

Next up would be a Hudy board. They are decent priced and wear good. Pretty heavy also though.

I have seen guys use Aluminum panels, top and bottom is solid but the innards are corrugated. it is stiff and light.

You might be able to get a sink cutout from a granite countertop company. That would be really heavy but for something sitting in your garage it wouldn't be bad.
