In terms of the engine temp, I didn't get a device to indicate this so guess I will need to get one of these in order to complete the break-in??

No not really when I ran nitro i used the spit test . Water boils at 212f so i just spit on the head and watched how long it would take to evaporate off . lol , But of course I did buy one . For nitro I always liked the mip or traxxas on board guages they give you a reading over the whole run as well as the peak temp.
