The smart tray is meant more for equalizing. But, I've seen some guys just take the pack directly from a race and put it on the smart tray. I'm not sure how much better your batteries will perform if you dump them on a 20 or 30 amp discharger and then equalize them. I've heard some argue that you might want to avoid the constant 20-30 amp discharge as well, since it doesn't reflect most racing conditions (except oval maybe).

Get the novak tray. A little more pricey than the rest, but at least you won't be second-guessing yourself later. It's one of the most popular items at my LHS.
